El Paisa Empanadas earns plenty of praise

At El Paisa Empanadas, the customer is in the driver's seat. Literally.

Not only will owner-chef- driver Juan Tabares make your meal to order, he might even let you sit in the driver's seat of his big, white Food Wagon while you wait. That's where a friend and I found ourselves during a recent lunch break. Well, my friend was in the driver's seat; as a first-time customer, I was offered the fold-down passenger seat.

During a brief stay in New York, I developed a taste for the empanadas prepared by the Colombians in my Queens neighborhood. Luckily for me (and you) Empanadas El Paisa mobile food wagon prepares the mashed-up mix of beef and potatoes wrapped in a small pocket of corn dough and fried. Nice and fairly crunchy, the empanadas are even better after a dunk in the spot's homemade salsa. El Paisa also serves tacos, burritos, chicharrones and fried plantains. While empanadas may be the perfect snack, there's nothing wrong with making a whole meal out of them. In fact, that's the easiest way to fill up your punch card and earn a free one.
